About
Nicola Setterfield
I am a qualified Therapist and Systemic Practitioner, with experience of working alongside adults, young people and families. My approach is grounded in Person-Centred Counselling and Systemic Family Therapy approaches, and showing acceptance, empathy and authenticity is key. Therapy is tailored to the individual and the focus is on difficulties as defined by the young person/adult. I adapt to individual's needs and approaches, for example therapy may involve a safe space to explore experiences or difficult emotions through counselling, play-based therapy, sessions using a CBT approach or more systemic, family work.
With a grounding in Person-Centred Psychotherapy, compassion and a non-judgemental stance are very important. It is based on an approach of empathy, genuineness and acceptance. This can allow natural deeper exploration of feelings, and aid an individual in discovering answers for themselves.

Systemic Family Therapy and Person-Centred therapy both value the relationship and the promotion of empathy. Systemic therapy looks to identify family strengths, facilitate communication, encourage members to help and understand each other, and find ways of working together to create positive changes.
Qualifications and Experience
I have worked as a Counsellor and Therapist with young people, adults and families. I have experience offering counselling on a short term and long term basis and adapt my approach to suit the needs and approaches of individuals. I have experience of working using play for children, CBT for those who would prefer a more guided approach, and focus on family and relationships. I have worked as a Therapist alongside children, young people and families using a variety of approaches and in relation to a wide range of difficulties. I have also worked for a number of years as a Counsellor with students and adults on an individual basis.

I believe strongly in a non-judgemental, empathic and genuine approach, and have an interest in working systemically, meaning working with various members of the family; all those potentially impacted upon by ongoing difficulties. This could be exploring family dynamics and relationships, family history and patterns of communication and how to move forward as a family working together.

I am a qualified Counsellor/Psychotherapist having completed a Post-graduate Diploma in Counselling (BACP accredited), and I am an Accredited member of The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have a Bachelor of Science degree with Upper Second Class Honours in Psychology and Sociology. I am also a qualified Systemic Practitioner, having completed training, with distinction, in a Family Therapy course (accredited by the Association of Family Therapy).

Additional training includes the use of CBT for children, Young People and Families and the use of CBT with children with phobias.
